Stability of melt flow during magnetic sonication in a floating zone configuration

2018

Combined static and alternating magnetic fields are shown to create an oscillating pressure that can cause cavitation in molten metals. A time-averaged flow is also excited, consisting of two tori squeezed to thin boundary layers. Flow instability develops as a standing wave between these tori.

Selective Band Gap to Suppress the Spurious Acoustic Mode in Film Bulk Acoustic Resonator Structures

2018

In this work, we investigate numerically the propagation of Lamb waves in a film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) structure formed by piezoelectric ZnO layer sandwiched between two Mo electrodes coupled with Bragg reflectors; the system is thus considered as a phononic-crystal (PnC) plate. The aim is to suppress the first-order symmetric Lamb wave mode considered as a spurious mode caused by the establishment of a lateral standing wave due to the reflection at the embedded lateral extremities of the structure; this spurious mode is superposing to the main longitudinal mode resonance of the FBAR. The finite element study, using harmonic and eigen-frequency analyses, is performed on the section…

Slow-Mode Magnetoacoustic Waves in Coronal Loops

2021

Rapidly decaying long-period oscillations often occur in hot coronal loops of active regions associated with small (or micro-) flares. This kind of wave activity was first discovered with the SOHO/SUMER spectrometer from Doppler velocity measurements of hot emission lines, thus also often called "SUMER" oscillations. They were mainly interpreted as global (or fundamental mode) standing slow magnetoacoustic waves. In addition, increasing evidence has suggested that the decaying harmonic type of pulsations detected in light curves of solar and stellar flares are likely caused by standing slow-mode waves. The study of slow magnetoacoustic waves in coronal loops has become a topic of particular…

The impacts of the ALE and hydrostatic-pressure approaches on the energy budget of unsteady free-surface flows

2008

Abstract This paper focuses on the energy budget in the calculation of unsteady free-surface flows on moving grids with and without using the ‘arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian’ (ALE) formulation or hydrostatic-pressure assumption. The numerical tool is an in-house general-purpose solver for the unsteady, incompressible and homogeneous Navier–Stokes equations in a Cartesian domain. An explicit fractional-step method and co-located finite-volume method are used for the second-order accurate integrations in time and space. The test cases are nonlinear and linear irrotational standing waves, which allow to characterise the impacts of an ALE or Eulerian formulation with moving grids by comparison w…

Interface properties of magnetic tunnel junctionLa0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3superlattices studied by standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy

2010

The chemical and electronic-structure profiles of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 (LSMO/STO) superlattices have been quantitatively determined via soft and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission, x-ray absorption and x-ray reflectivity, in conjunction with x-ray optical and core-hole multiplet theoretical modeling. Epitaxial superlattice samples consisting of 48 and 120 bilayers of LSMO and STO, each nominally four unit cells thick, and still exhibiting LSMO ferromagnetism, were studied. By varying the incidence angle around the superlattice Bragg condition, the standing wave was moved vertically through the interfaces. By comparing experiment to x-ray optical c…

Ultrahigh-Q Tunable Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microresonator

2009

Typical microresonators exhibit a large frequency spacing between resonances and a limited tunability. This impedes their use in a large class of applications which require a resonance of the microcavity to coincide with a predetermined frequency. Here, we experimentally overcome this limitation with highly prolate-shaped whispering-gallery-mode "bottle microresonators" fabricated from standard optical glass fibers. Our resonators combine an ultra-high quality factor of 360 million, a small mode volume, and near lossless fibre coupling, characteristic of whispering-gallery-mode resonators, with a simple and customizable mode structure enabling full tunability.

On-chip periodic arrays of optical traps based on the superposition of guided modes in silicon waveguides

2019

Since the pioneering work of Kawata and Tani [1], photonic waveguides have long been regarded as efficient optical conveyor belts for potential lab-on-a-chip applications. Indeed, near-field optical forces arising at the surface of such waveguides lead to efficient on-chip guided propulsion of micro- and even nanoparticles [2], as well as cells and bacteria in liquid solutions [3]. However, achieving stable and precisely controlled optical trapping of particles at the surface of a waveguide has been made possible only recently, and even then, it still requires complex photonic electro-optic tools to produce and handle on-chip standing waves [4].

Continuous wave dual-wavelength operation at 1048 and 1386 nm in Nd3+:LaBGeO<inf>5</inf> for yellow laser light ge…

2007

We present results on simultaneous oscillation in continuous-wave at 1048 and 1386 nm in Nd3+:LaBGeO5 crystal. LaBGeO5 is a nonlinear positive uniaxial crystal with potential application for intracavity generation of yellow laser radiation at 597 nm. Due to the different cross section in both laser channels, simultaneous oscillation is achieved by axial hole burning in a standing wave (linear cavity). It is concluded that a stable output laser spectrum is obtained for an absorbed pump power of 700 mW. A laser competition with alternating single-channel and dual-channel oscillation at different pump regimes was observed in the experiments.

Actinic EUVL mask blank defect inspection by EUV photoelectron microscopy

2006

A new method for the actinic at-wavelength inspection of defects inside and ontop of Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUVL) multilayer-coated mask blanks is presented. The experimental technique is based on PhotoElectron Emission Microscopy (PEEM) supported by the generation of a standing wave field inside and above the multilayer mask blank when illuminated near the resonance Bragg wavelength at around 13.5 nm wavelength. Experimental results on programmed defect samples based on e-beam lithographic structures or PSL equivalent silica balls overcoated with an EUV multilayer show that buried defects scaling down to 50 nm in lateral size are detectable with further scalability down to 30 nm …

Actinic inspection of sub-50 nm EUV mask blank defects

2007

A new actinic mask inspection technology to probe nano-scaled defects buried underneath a Mo/Si multilayer reflection coating of an Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography mask blank has been implemented using EUV Photoemission Electron Microscopy (EUV-PEEM). EUV PEEM images of programmed defect structures of various lateral and vertical sizes recorded at around 13 nm wavelength show that 35 nm wide and 4 nm high buried line defects are clearly detectable. The imaging technique proves to be sensitive to small phase jumps enhancing the visibility of the edges of the phase defects which is explained in terms of a standing wave enhanced image contrast at resonant EUV illumination.
